Bad Boy Furniture Warehouse Ltd., a renowned Toronto furniture brand, has filed for restructuring under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. The decision, revealed in a notice presented to an Ontario court last week, comes in response to challenging economic conditions impacting consumer habits and the company’s overall business strategy.
Bad Boy Furniture, founded in 1955 by former Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman, gained fame through its distinctive advertising featuring Mel and his son Blayne clad in black and white jailhouse uniforms, emphatically declaring, “Who’s better than Bad Boy? Nooobody.” However, the company, now wholly owned by Blayne Lastman under Lastman Furniture Inc., has faced obstacles in recent years.
Sadly, Mayor Mel passed away on Dec. 11, 2021.

Reportedly, debts owed to unsecured creditors, including major suppliers like Whirlpool Canada LP and Samsung Appliances, amount to $13.7 million.
The court documents reportedly reveal that Bad Boy is encountering significant challenges in sourcing inventory, leading to purported contract terminations.

To address the situation, Bad Boy is contemplating a liquidation sale at some or all of its stores to streamline inefficient business segments. Customers who have paid a collective $4.5 million in deposits for undelivered furniture are urged to contact their credit card companies for refunds. The company expresses its commitment to working with customers to complete orders where possible.
As Bad Boy faces challenging times, the company’s fate hinges on the success of its restructuring efforts and the resolution of its financial woes.
