Toronto is third on comical list of romantic cities that includes Windsor and London

Studies are apparently all the rage and sometimes things get a bit weird — case in point, a new “study” of the top romantic cities in Canada.

We know what you’re thinking. Perhaps the list will include historic gems like Quebec City and Montreal that exude European charm. Nope, not on the list. Surely, that GTA favourite Niagara-on-the-Lake then? Umm, no.

Now, sure Windsor might be a very nice town perhaps best known for autoworkers and casinos, but to include this city ahead of, hmm, Niagara Falls let’s say or even better Niagara-on-the-Lake? It is somewhat questionable.

And, London, Ontario made the list. Having some experience with London, we can say without a doubt it has its charms. But is it romantic? Absolutely not.

This particular study by something called CasinosHunter delved into the average monthly Google searches for 32 romance-related keywords across Canadian cities.

Topping the list is Victoria, British Columbia, earning the title of Canada’s most romantic city with an impressive average of 5,283 monthly searches per 100,000 people for romance-related terms. Notably, Victoria residents show a keen interest in Valentine’s Day, engagement rings, and florists, underscoring their commitment to romantic gestures year-round.

Victoria as Canada’s most romantic city is legit. It’s one of the country’s warmest cities, there are flowers everywhere, the ocean, and more.

Following Victoria closely is Vancouver, BC, claiming the second spot with 3,399 monthly searches per 100,000 individuals. Vancouverites exhibit a similar enthusiasm for Valentine’s Day and engagement rings, but also display a penchant for seeking out romantic restaurants and florists.

Toronto secures the third position on the romantic cities ranking, with an average of 2,543 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. Noteworthy search terms in Toronto include florists and romantic movie venues, indicating a consistent year-round interest in all things romantic.

By the way, here is a list of romantic restaurants in Toronto.

Despite its smaller size, Moncton, New Brunswick emerges as a surprisingly romantic city, boasting 2,017 monthly searches per 100,000 people. Residents here display a strong affinity for Valentine’s Day, romantic movies, and red roses.

Then we have the aforementioned Windsor, ranking fifth in the entire country with 1,966 monthly searches per 100,000 individuals. The city’s residents exhibit a particular interest in engagement rings and florists.

Peterborough takes the sixth spot with 1,947 monthly searches per 100,000 people. Similar to other cities, Peterborough residents frequently search for florists, romantic movies, and restaurants. Now, one might suggest, like in this study, that this search displays a romantic spirit, but it could also illustrate what a particular city lacks, explaining why people are hitting up the old Google machine for tips.

The list concludes with Kingston, London, St. John’s and Calgary. The last two cities are the only Maritimes and Alberta cities on the list respectively.

Here is our list:

  1. Quebec City
  2. Montreal
  3. Victoria
  4. Banff
  5. Niagara-on-the-Lake
  6. Tofino
  7. Charlottetown
  8. Toronto
  9. Kingston
  10. Whistler

The study underscores the varying degrees of romantic fervour across Canadian cities, with some communities showing a significantly higher propensity for seeking out romantic gestures and ideas. But, a lot of Google searches for a romantic cinema doesn’t not make it a romantic city.

This list is almost as bad as that time Amazon.com ranked Newmarket in the top 20 of another romantic city list.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, remember to not go by Internet “studies” when looking for a romantic destination. You might end up in downtown Windsor sharing a Hawaiian pizza before hitting the casino and some cross-border shopping to celebrate with your true love.

We asked CasinosHunter for its list of romantic keywords but haven’t heard back.
