There was a small chance Barnes could have returned before the end of the season had surgery not been required, but now his season is almost surely done, though the team didn’t say that in a news release issued Monday night.

Los Angeles Clippers guard Russell Westbrook coincidentally fractured a bone in his left hand on Friday as well and the Clippers announced Monday that he had also undergone successful surgery. Los Angeles is a title contender and hopes to have Westbrook back for the playoffs, ESPN reported. Toronto has nothing to play for, so rushing Barnes back would make little sense.

Barnes had a breakout third season, earning his first all-star appearance and averaging career highs of 19.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.5 blocks, 1.3 steals and 34.9 minutes in 60 games. He also set a Raptors single-season record by recording four triple-doubles.

Toronto hosts the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday with Barnes, Jakob Poeltl and Bruce Brown already ruled out as injuries mount for the Raptors.
