Florida Atlantic University announced on Monday that it would be squaring off with state rival South Florida in a very unique location: On an aircraft carrier in “floating in the Atlantic.”

Complete with a picture of a football field on the deck of an aircraft carrier, the post was captioned: “Where better to host this year’s ‘Battle of the Coasts’ than off the coast of the Atlantic?
“The game vs @USFFootball will be played in the Atlantic Ocean aboard an aircraft carrier, a first in college football history.”

Of course, the biggest risk would be seeing a player unable to slow down on an ‘out’ route and go overboard, but how much give there would be in some turf laid over the ship’s deck would also be a worry.
While the logistics of holding such a game would be a real-life nightmare, it didn’t stop fans on social media from wishing that this announcement was no April Fools’ Day joke.
“I know the date, but I wish this true,” one user on X posted.
“How much do we need to pay for this to actually happen???” College Sports Only replied to the post.

“We math’d this out and it would actually work (April 1 notwithstanding),” fan account Sickos Committee wrote. “Some tight sidelines, but if you’re not worried about someone plunging into the water, you’d be OK.”
Another user wrote “I know this is an April fools joke but like, there’s gotta be ONE carrier big enough to make this a reality lol.”
While there have been NCAA basketball games on the deck of an aircraft carrier – six games in total back in 2011 and 2012 — we’re not getting our hopes up for a football matchup.
But, if Florida Atlantic proved one thing with its post, there’s definitely an appetite to see teams face off on the high seas.
