On Thursday, Louisville Metro Police Department chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel provided an update on the high-profile incident involving the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer last week at the PGA Championship.

Detective Bryan Gillis arrested Scheffler after the golfer allegedly tried to circumvent heavy traffic caused by a police investigation into a deadly accident outside Valhalla Golf Club last week.

“Detective Gillis should have turned on his body-worn camera but did not,” Gwinn-Villaroel said. “His failure to do so is a violation of LMPD policy on uniforms and equipment.

Detective Gillis did not have his body-worn camera operationally ready as required by our policy,” she said. “He was performing a law-enforcement action as defined in our policy. Further, section 4.31.7 states members will maintain their BWC (body-worn cameras) in constant state of operational readiness.”

The day after Scheffler’s arrest, Louisville mayor Craig Greenberg told reporters there was no known video of the initial interaction between the officer and the Masters champion.

“We understand the seriousness of the failure to capture this interaction, which is why our officer has received corrective action for this policy violation,” Gwinn-Villaroel said.

LMPD released two videos of the incident on Thursday — one from a stationary camera across the street and another from a police dash-cam — but neither one shows the initial interaction between Gillis and Scheffler.

The stationary camera appears to show an SUV driven by Scheffler turning into the Valhalla entrance, at which point an officer runs towards the vehicle and appears to strike it as it stops.

The video doesn’t appear to show any officer being dragged by Scheffler’s vehicle, which is a major claim in the police report that led to a felony charge for assaulting an officer.

The police dash-cam video shows Scheffler in handcuffs being taken into custody.

Earlier this week, the golfer’s arraignment hearing was postponed until Monday, June 3.

Scheffler is in the field this week at the Charles Schwab Challenge and is expected to play the Memorial tournament on the week of his arraignment.
