Samsonov was placed on waivers last month and went unclaimed, allowing the Leafs to the struggling goalie a chance to work on his game with Toronto Marlies goalie coach Hannu Toivonen and the Leafs’ development staff.

“Ilya has had a good week,” Leafs general manager Brad Treliving said earlier this week. “We’re going to huddle later (Monday) afternoon to map out the next piece of (the process). His on-ice and off-ice work has been good.”
Dennis Hildeby, who served as backup to Martin Jones with Samsonov working on his game and Justin Holl recovering from a sprained ankle, will be returned to the Marlies.
Unfortunately, he didn’t get a chance to make his NHL debut with Jones providing strong play in the Leafs net.
Jones made 22 saves on 23 shots in the Leafs 7-1 win against the Sharks on Tuesday night. The victory improved his record on the season to 8-3 with a stunning 1.98 GAA. He also was named the NHL’s second star of the week on Monday.
