Bucs coach Todd Bowles laughs off reporter’s question about Detroit weather

The weather forecast in Detroit this Saturday is a chilly -8 C with winds gusting around 20 km/h.

With the Detroit Lions will be hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, one intrepid reporter asked coach Todd Bowles how the warm-weather team will be dealing with the frosty temperatures.

“Looking forward to Detroit, the weather has been a factor in some of the playoff games, even for the most prepared teams. Today, it’s 13 in Detroit,” the reporter said. “Any special plans to acclimate the team to not only endure but perform in those kind of frigid temperatures should you face (the Lions) in Detroit?”

Bowles paused for a beat to think before responding to the reporter.

Now, on its face, that’s a good, reasonable question. Except for one tiny detail …

“You do know we play indoors, right? They got a dome,” Bowles said.

Ah yes, the Lions play at Ford Field, an indoor stadium.

“No, nothing planned. We’re indoors and we only have to outside for 20 seconds getting off the bus,” Bowles added with a smile on his face. “We’ll be OK.”

Perhaps even worse for the reporter, the Lions actually have played indoors at home since 1975, with the Pontiac Silverdome serving as their home field until 2002, when Ford Field was completed.

Of course, weather was a big factor during the wild-card weekend in the NFL.

In Kansas City, temperatures for the game between the Chiefs and Miami Dolphins were an absolutely frigid -30 C with the windchill – which didn’t do the Florida-based team any favours.

In Buffalo, a severe snowstorm resulted in the game being postponed by a day and the Bills hiring fans to help dig out the stadium for its game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Fans were seen trudging through piles of snow to get to find spots to sit as assigned seating was abandoned.

While this weekend will bring some more frosty temperatures to some playoff games, these sorts of extremes are not expected.
